The job market can be a tough place for older adults looking for work, with employers tending to favour younger candidates. A study by Age UK showed that nearly half of older adults surveyed were worried that employers would show preference to those in their 20s. Many recently retired people want to continue working part-time in a role that gives them purpose, but also allows them the free time they've worked hard for. However, we've spoken to many older people who described applying for roles as "terrifying" and "intimidating".
"I'm newly retired and here is a job that I'm qualified to do and that I could enjoy. The hours suit me too! I had worked in a primary school and had spent the last four years caring for my grandsons. Koru Kids arranged introductions to families and I start work with a lovely family next week."Grandmother of two
For ‘empty nesters’, when children have flown the nest, spending time with young children again can be a rewarding and fun way to spend their spare time. Working with kids can energise the lives of older adults and bring a real sense of purpose back to daily life. Plus, it's a great way to earn a bit of extra income.
Many older adults will have brought up their own children or grandchildren, so will have had the best possible experience for a role in childcare, and know exactly what is required of them. Having had their own careers, they understand the support that working parents require, and so can be relied upon to be responsible, supportive and great communicators. These qualities ensure that they can have a positive impact on the lives of working families.
Koru Kids is a childcare service that have recognised the benefits that working with kids can bring to older people (and vice versa!). We are recruiting older adults to become after school nannies and matching them with local families. We provide training and support throughout and the working hours are part-time in the afternoons.
Koru Kids is building the world’s best childcare service and is looking for older adults in London who are interested in becoming after school nannies.
