The Koru Kids after school nannies love sharing ideas with each other for fun stuff to do with the kids after school.  We took a peek at their online discussion group, where they offer each other tips on activities to get stuck into between homework and dinnertime.

Here are a few of our favourites among their recent ideas.

Homemade crisps:

Florence, the nanny who took this photo, swears they’re easy to make.  We don’t know about that but we are very sure they would be easy to eat.

What to do:

In a pot of boiling water cook the potato slices for 3-5 minute. Drain well and combine with oil, salt, pepper and spices (garlic, oregano, basil, etc) in a large bowl. Place potato slices on prepared baking sheet in one layer. Bake for about 15 minutes until crisp and golden brown.

Blow painting with straws:

Let’s face it, it’s not always easy to be genuinely excited about your kids’ artwork. But these paintings look really cool—like actually really cool! We’d buy that print on a t-shirt.

What to do:

  1. Cut and place a piece of paper to cover the bottom of plastic container for easy cleanup.
  2. Ask your child to pick a paint colour, and pour a tiny bit onto the paper.
  3. Using a straw, invite your child to blow the paint. Make sure they don't suck in the straw!
  4. Keep putting more colours on the paper until they've created their very own master piece
  5. Let the painting dry, and hang the beautiful artwork when it's done!

Stick superheros:

How adorable are these caped ice lolly sticks?

What to do:

  1. Get the children to paint or colour the popsicle sticks however they like!
  2. While they are working on that – cut out some triangles from card for the capes
  3. To finish off the Popsicle Stick Superheroes – simply glue the popsicle stick to the “cape”
  4. Then add any other embellishments you see fit {like glitter, rhinestones etc}

In case the stick superheroes aren’t great enough on their own, they were accompanied by a mini comic book detailing their exploits. We await the film with anticipation.

Other cool stuff the nannies have done recently with the kids: made salt dough ornaments; held a karaoke competition incorporating homemade instruments; and made a bug hotel, complete with plasticine TV, sofa and bed.  We have to admit we are a bit jealous of their jobs

If you're looking for some help after school, our after school nannies can pick up from school, help with homework and dinner. Plus, as you can see they are bursting with great ideas to keep the kids entertained.
