Why nannies make sense for families with SEN children

A Koru Kids nanny provides personalised care in your child’s familiar home environment, meaning your child gets the perfect mix of consistency, routine and flexibility.

Here’s what some parents have said:

“Koru Kids has been a game changer for our family with SEN needs because my children can’t cope with after school care. Before we started using Koru Kids,  we didn’t have any wrap care at all.”

“We use Koru kids specifically because our son is autistic and so the wraparound care at school can’t meet his needs. A nanny who he knows well in his own house is much better.”

With my son’s needs we were keen to find someone who already had experience working with autistic kids, particularly those with no or little language. We were able to find some good candidates with experience who could talk about it at interview, I was surprised by how many good quality candidates with that previous experience we found, and our current nanny had really relevant previous experience and has been great.”

We can work with SEN-specific funding

We’re experienced at working with specialist funding, including the Short Breaks scheme and others.

Contact us to discuss how we can accept your specific funding.

Please note that some funding schemes do require Ofsted-registration, and only a small number of our nannies are Ofsted-registered. We can work with you to register a nanny but please be aware this will involve additional cost and time.

You might be wondering

We include all the costs associated with hiring a nanny in the hourly rate you see on the platform. This is the nanny’s pay, taxes, your employer taxes and pension. We also include our service fee in the hourly rate so there isn’t a big upfront cost like with other agencies.

The first time you hire a nanny with us there is also a one-off set-up fee.

It depends. Some nannies might have worked in an area for years but not live there. Others will live close-by. Many are happy to travel for the right family and job.

It varies. Some nannies will drive and have their own car. Some will have a driving licence so can be insured on your family car.

All of our nannies speak fluent English. For most, it’s their first language, but many speak other languages as well. Our nannies come from a range of backgrounds, so just let us know on the registration form if you have any language requirements and we’ll do our best to send you nannies who speak that language. If it’s a bonus rather than a deal breaker, the number of potential nannies we can show you really increases.

All nannies receive basic nanny training, and have free access to accredited Level 2 training courses in areas like Understanding Autism, Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties, and Behaviour That Challenges in Children. We are currently developing further training on SEN subjects. If there are some specific topics you would like your nanny to receive training in, we would love to hear about it.

As you will be the legal employer of your nanny, the contract exists between you and them. Koru Kids will write the contract for you so you don’t need to worry. When we set up your contract, we will ask you to complete our set-up form which will ask for some preferences. We’ll then send out a draft version of your contract for you to review.
Our standard nanny contracts have a 2 week probation period with 24 hours notice, and a 2 week notice period after the probation period. For families with specific SEN needs who would like a longer probation period, we can accommodate up to six weeks. If you need to bring the contract to an end, you simply need to provide your nanny with the agreed notice period. We’ll be there to support you with all the next steps to ensure your contract is finalised.

A small number of our nannies are Ofsted-registered, but most are not. If your funding source requires Ofsted registration (e.g. childcare vouchers or tax-free childcare), we can provide you with the information to register your nanny. It usually costs about £500 as your nanny will need to attend certain training on-top of the registration fee.

We’re experienced working with specialist SEN funding, including the Short Breaks scheme and others. Contact us to discuss whether we can accept your specific funding.

Many nannies will have Enhanced DBS checks and First Aid certificates that are still valid. If they have expired we’ll run a new DBS and book them onto an in-person First Aid course before they start.

Yes. While our nannies can provide personal care which is a normal part of childcare – for example, we can help a toddler with potty training or dressing – we usually cannot support personal care for older children, particularly teenagers. This is because it falls under different regulations and requires specific registrations and training that Koru Kids nannies do not hold.

Unfortunately we cannot provide:

  • Specialist medical procedures (please note, administering/supervising the taking of regular medication is fine, provided nanny is given adequate training)
  • Regulated personal care for older children or teenagers
  • Lifting or moving a child using hoists or similar equipment
  • Care that would normally be provided by a registered care agency rather than a childcare provider
