With over 20 years of teaching experience, Claire decided to make the switch to become a childminder in Southall. There’s a huge emphasis on reading at Claire’s home nursery, and she hopes to introduce children to a love of books from an early age. We caught up with Claire, to find out more about her love of literature and her passion for childcare.

A love for reading
The focus on reading at Claire’s home nursery is not only is this vital for school readiness—it sparks childrens’ imagination and harnesses their natural curiosity.
“I have a degree in English Literature and History and place a huge emphasis on children’s literature. I’ve read hundreds of fabulously engaging children’s books, and can’t wait to introduce them to your children! We make regular trips to the local library to refresh our bookshelf and participate in story time sessions.”

Maximising learning potential
Koru Kids Early Educators get out and about with the children each morning, before returning home to continue the learning and fun into the afternoon. Claire has lots of activity ideas up her sleeve to keep little ones entertained and engaged.
“As an ex primary school teacher, I have a thorough understanding of childrens’ development and plan my activities so they maximise learning potential. My mud tray allows for endless opportunities for little ones to get creative with making potions and mud pies (and best of all, getting messy!). I also have an array of educational toys. They provide lots of opportunities to practise naming colours, counting and learning shapes. Art and craft activities are also very popular in my house. We love making beautiful collages from the natural materials we collect during our morning outdoor adventures.”

Childminding in Southall: parks and green spaces to explore
As a childminder in Southall, Claire benefits from a huge array of natural learning spots on her doorstep. She can turn a pile of pinecones and a few sticks into hours of learning and fun!
“Our local park, Glade Lane, is currently being regenerated and will soon have a brand new playground and lots of other exciting new activities. On days where we’re keen to venture a little bit further, we will go to Warren Farm nature reserve. This beautiful green space is home to an abundance of common, rare and endangered species—such as skylarks, barn owls, bats and so many more. It’s a great spot for the children to learn about nature and the habitats that local wildlife call home.”

Yummy for little tummies
Healthy and delicious homemade meals are served each day at Claire’s home nursery in Southall. Her menu rotates every 4 weeks, so mealtimes are always fresh and exciting for the children.
“My husband was born and raised in Lebanon, so I have learnt to cook lots of lovely Lebanese dishes. This includes makloubeh, a spiced rice dish with roasted vegetables (usually cauliflower or aubergine) served with lamb or chicken. Each meal always contains a good serving of veggies to keep growing bodies supercharged. I’m vegetarian, so I often cook healthy vegetarian recipes for the children, such as veggie fajitas (my kids love them!).”
