Well known for its child friendly atmosphere, Brighton has a huge array of exciting spots to take the kids during half term—but don’t worry if the Sea Life Centre and the pier just aren’t cutting it anymore! We asked some local parents to let us in on their hidden gems in and around Brighton and Hove.
The Toy Museum
The Toy Museum, situated in the midst of the quirky North Laines, is a particular favourite of Kate and Sharon (@lesbemums). The Victorian building is home to toys dating back to the 1920’s, from Lego to Locomotives. It costs under £20 for a family of 5 and is a great indoor spot for a rainy day.
Marrocco’s Ice Cream
Emma (@brighton_bloggers) loves to take her kids to get ice cream from Marrocco’s. You can find this family-run Italian ice cream shop and restaurant on the Hove seafront.
Stanmer Park
Another of Emma’s hidden gems in Brighton is Stanmer Park, located in the South Downs National Park. With its stunning woodland walks and open spaces, it’s the perfect spot for a family picnic.
Darth Vader room at Hotel Pelirocco
For Star Wars fans, Chelle (@chellemccann) recommends booking a night in the Darth Vader room at Hotel Pelirocco in Regency Square. Plus if you live locally, the hotel gives a 10% discount.
Rock Pools in Rottingdean
If you’re looking for a budget friendly activity, Chelle recommends hopping on the 14 bus to Rottingdean to explore the rock pools. These rock pools are best viewed at low tide, and there is a nearby fish and chip shop to grab a bite to eat afterwards. Just don’t forget your rock pooling equipment!
The Community Orchard at Race Hill
To get in the autumn spirit, Chelle loves to visit the Community Orchard at Race Hill. With trees to climb and a bonfire for toasting marshmallows, it’s the perfect spot to tell spooky Halloween tales.
The Old Boat Corner Community Centre in Hollingbury
Poppy (@poppystclair) loves taking her kids to the big soft play on a Monday and Wednesday at the Old Boat Corner Community Centre. The centre features great priced coffee and cake, indoor toys, a play park outside and other activities throughout the week. They also have second hand clothes and food (dry goods, baby food, fruit and veg etc) which you can buy for a donation.
Hove Park Miniature Railway
You can catch a ride on this miniature railway in Hove Park for just £1, and under 3s go free.
Upside Down House
This museum, full of optical illusions and hilarious photo opportunities, is situated right on the Brighton seafront.
